Jeff is a brilliant graphic designer and friend of mine that I had the opportunity to work with for over a year on the Sites Team at Code42. We decided to share our unique talents and help each other out on a few projects. I, for example, was engaged at the time and needed assistance with my fiancé and I’s wedding collateral. He, on the other hand, needed a new portfolio site.
All design of the site was handled by Jeff – it’s what he does, and he does it well. My role was transforming his designs into an easy to use admin experience for him to work with.
Knowing locked down, rigid templates were not going to serve his needs, I proposed a module library solution using Advanced Custom Fields Pro for WordPress. In this way, he could mix and match the various layouts he needed for a particular portfolio item to create the perfect page to showcase his work.
The following graphic demonstrates the functionality we came up with. When he’s building a new portfolio page, he simply selects from the options listed in the pop-over.
Once added, each module is built with a variety of options specific to that module. I also made sure to add plenty of documentation directly to the experience itself, thoroughly explaining what each part of the module does.
To date, Jeff has only added a handful of projects to his portfolio site, but I personally can’t wait to see the entire home page filled with his great work.
